We focused on Chapter One: Giving from the Heart (from the book "Nonviolent Communication: A Language for Life" by Marshall Rosenberg - chapter is linked below), with exercises and discussions on what it means to give from the heart, and what happens when we give from a place other than our hearts. We also focused our attention on Intention, with exercises to guide awareness to our intentions. Intention as a Concept: "The intention of NVC is to develop a quality of connection that allows us to understand and value each other's needs, and then together explore how to meet both our needs. We hold this intention to connect heart-to-heart -- even when we are angry or "don't feel like connecting" -- by remembering that connection is the value we are choosing to live from in this moment. On the other hand, if we are invested only in getting certain results, and have no intention to connect human to human, heart to heart, then no matter how strictly our speech adheres to to the NVC model, we are not expression NVC consciousness." The very first step to any changes in communication can be facilitated by becoming aware of our intentions. Next week, we will practice through the chapter "Communication That Blocks Compassion"!
